Rabbi Jay Sherwood is the Founding Rabbi of Adat Re'im. Rabbi Jay received his BA in Jewish Studies from UCLA and received his Rabbinic Ordination and Master of Rabbinic Studies degree from the Academy for Jewish Religion, California.Before entering the rabbinate, Rabbi Jay had a twenty-plus year career in Jewish education and Jewish camping, during which he served as Director of Youth and Informal Educational Programming at Temple Beth Hillel in North Hollywood, CA; Director of Education at Temple Beth Israel in Pomona, CA; and Jewish Educator/Rabbinic Intern at Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services in Los Angeles, CA. He held such positions as Program Director, Education Director and Music Director at Jewish summer camps and travel programs throughout the United States and Israel, as well as over 250 Jewish camp weekends for youth, adults and families. Rabbi Jay is a strong proponent of Israel and Israel education. While a Fellow of the Project OTZMA Jewish Service Corp in Israel (1988-1989), he was able to share his love of Judaism and his love of music with children and adults all across Israel. Rabbi Jay returns to Israel regularly, with his most recent trip being a Summer 2009 congregational tour. Rabbi Jay was chosen to participate in the American Jewish World Service 2008 Rabbinic Students’ Delegation to Ghana. An accomplished composer and performer, music from Rabbi Jay’s CDs, Sh’ma Koleinu and Wrapped Up In The Fringes, has been heard from the stage at CAJE (Coalition for the Advancement in Jewish Education) to XM Radio’s Radio Hanukkah. Outside of the Jewish community, Rabbi Jay is a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Association, a TV game show champion (Rock & Roll Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit), and once worked on Main Street at Disneyland. Rabbi Jay and his lovely wife Lisa were married in 2003 on Erev Tu B'Av. For this special occasion, Jay wrote "Lisa's Song ('Til I Found You)," which might just make it onto a CD sometime in the future. They are blessed with two wonderful children. |
